Student Learning
Over the past eighteen months, the provincial government has engaged citizens and stakeholders throughout the province in two initiatives - Inspiring Education and Setting the Direction. These discussions examined how learning into the future might be better delivered in Alberta to support our students in becoming successful, productive citizens and lifelong learners.
As your trustee, I participated in all these discussions and forums. The Steering Committee report, released in April 2010, “envisions students who are engaged, ethical and entrepreneurial.” The Calgary Board of Education is poised and well prepared to provide its students with the variety of learning opportunities envisaged. Although it is a constant challenge in an increasingly diverse city, I believe that providing quality teaching and public schools that offer supportive learning environments tailored to meet each student’s needs is an investment in our collective future. It is essential that the Board of Trustees monitor responsibly and hold the school system accountable for student success. We also need to utilize the resources the province provides in the best ways possible to support student learning.
In the coming year, the province will be rewriting the School Act which will legislate the delivery of education in Alberta to reflect some of the values outlined in Inspiring Education. I hope to be a part of that conversation and represent Calgarians’ views on public education.
