Lynn Ferguson, Public School Trustee

Public School Trustee, Wards 3 and 4
Calgary Board of Education

About Lynn Ferguson

Lynn Ferguson, public school trustee for Wards 3 & 4, was first elected in October 2004. As an elected representative, Lynn believes it is critical to have a full understanding of the opportunities and challenges in each of the communities in Wards 3 & 4. Communicating effectively with constituents and school councils is integral to the role of trustee.

Currently, Lynn serves as the Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees. She sits as the Board’s Liaison to CBE/Staff Association Mutual Interest Committee as well. In the past, Lynn participated on the Audit, Policy and Linkages Committees and represented the Board on the Alberta School Boards Association Zone 5.

Prior to her election as school trustee, Lynn was a founding member and Vice-President of the Calgary Association of Parents and School Councils. She spent seventeen years in various roles on school councils. In addition, Lynn was part of the Steering Committee for Support Public Education – Act for Kids (SPEAK) which presented to the Alberta Government Standing Policy Committee on Learning and Employment in 2001. She was a founding member and past Vice-President of KIDS FIRST, a parent organization which advocated for tax reform for families. As a parent advocate she was a panel speaker on “Ensuring Equity,” part of the Calgary Board of Education Strategic Planning Sessions 2000, and participated in conferences on quality learning, school choice, twentieth century learning, learning technology and ESL immigrant integration.

Lynn graduated in 1975 from the University of Winnipeg with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and continued post graduate studies on the Connaught Fellowship at the University of Toronto. Lynn lived in Saudi Arabia for seven years where she worked as a school librarian in an International English School for ESL students. Lynn upholds a family tradition of public service as her paternal great grandfather was the treasurer of the first school board in Edmonton in 1880.

Lynn is married to Norman, a professional engineer, and the couple have three adult children. As a parent of children with learning difficulties, Lynn believes she can bring empathy to the role of trustee with families whose students may be struggling with success.

Passionate about public education, Lynn is committed to providing learning opportunities for every student to be successful and to continuing the important discussions on defining and achieving success in a very diverse society.
